Everything you knew about the awards is about to change...

Schedule
Nominations will open on March 1, 2013 and will run through October 1, 2013.
Popular vote will run from October 1, 2013 through December 1, 2013. Popular vote for Wiki of the Year will run from December 1, 2013 through December 31, 2013.
There will be no Wetpainter of the Year for 2013.

Categories
Due to lack of nominations in the past, the Gaming Gurus category has been eliminated. Also, due to the similiarities in the two, Mating, Dating, & Relating has also been eliminated in favor of Fans Gone Wild. Furthermore, Civic Superstars has been merged into Education, and Movie, TV, and Anime have been merged to form Popular Media.

This table should help you determine which categories to nominate your wikis in:
You should nominate your wiki for Education if you were a Civic Superstar before. You should nominate your wiki for Fans Gone Wild if you were:
  • Character
  • Mating, Dating, & Relating
You should nominate your wiki for Popular Media if you were:
  • Any of the previous TV categories
  • Movie
  • Anime

Awards
The Community vote is going to be considerably less important, as the polls themselves are usually flawed in that they always reflect the site with the most users rather than the site which is actually the best. Therefore, the Community vote will now be referred to as Most Popular Wiki award and will be equal in importance to the following, new awards.

There has hardly been a way to award wikis that have learned from their failures in previous awards before, but no longer. This year, we are introducing the Most Improved Wiki award. This award, which is judge's choice, awards wikis that have competed in previous awards by determining whether they have improved their content, activity, and organization. For obvious reasons, this award is not available to Emerging Wikis.

Before, Judge's Choice was selected based on sites that displayed good originality, high level of activity, and a high level of organization. However, there were some sites that displayed each of those characteristics more than the others. As a result of this flaw, Judge's Choice has been split into six seperate awards:

  • Most Active
    • Not just a one-man-show
      • Not just one or two people posting small things on a single thread to bump their activity rating. Or, one person making multiple small edits to a page for the same purpose.
    • Lots of unique members posting meaningful content to pages/threads
    • Sites will be visited randomly five times, three times each day, to determine this category, in order to be fair to other wikis
  • Most Original
    • Unique homepage design
    • Unique thread activities
    • Unique site activites
    • Unique content
  • Best Content
    • Sites with large amounts of content relevant to the wiki
    • The go-to site for said material
  • Most Organized
    • Wikis that have well-structured staffs
    • Well designed and easy-to-read homepage/directory
  • Best Staff
    • Large amount of active staff members
    • Staff members making meaningful contributions
    • Good staff/community interaction
  • Best Wiki (Formerly Judge's Choice)
    • How the above mix together to make a wiki truly come out on top

Also, due to the changes, now more than 10 wikis will be able to participate, not just the most active, so everyone will have a chance!

So, to sum things up, these are the awards you can win this year:

  • Most Popular Wiki
  • Most Improved Wiki
  • Most Active Wiki
  • Most Original Wiki
  • Best Content
  • Best Staff
  • Most Organized Wiki
  • Best Wiki (Formerly Judge's Choice)

If anyone has any ideas for more Judge's categories, please leave a message in the form of a thread on this page.

CaptainSpaz 6th Annual Golden Paint Can Awards - What do you think so far? 6 Jan 24 2013, 2:03 PM EST by Crystalfrost

Everything I have posted on this page is going to happen. It has come from comments/complaints from the previous year, as well as from sheer necessity since the Vizu polls no longer exist.

Anyway, the new award categories should ensure that even if a site does not have a lot of active members, it can still win an award...and without having to be in a Top 10 list. This way, more sites can enter and more sites can win.

Any ideas that come up between now and October 1, when the nominations close, will be considered and used.

Please use this thread to post any comments, complaints, or suggestions.

walrusworldstudios Hardest Working Staff - Possible Award Category 4 Jan 2 2013, 1:08 AM EST by naruto87

Hello Everyone!

For the last four years, I've been the head administrator of three very successful sites. Although two of these sites are no longer running, it's safe to assume that I know the key components of running a successful site. One of the most paramount components of running a successful wiki is having a hardworking staff. If the wiki doesn't have a hardworking staff, it will surely fail. With this in mind, I think one of the categories for this years' judging should select a wiki who has the "Hardest Working Staff".

One of the best measures of a hardworking staff is the staff's activity on the website. If the Staff Members are barely active, it's safe to assume that they don't work very hard at all. However, if a majority of the Staff Members are actively contributing to the improvement of the wiki, it's safe to assume that that particular staff works very hard. To measure each Staff Members' activity, the judges would have to check to ensure that member of the wiki's staff is making meaningful contributions to the site. This would ensure that the site's staff contributions are being judged by quality, rather than quantity.

Although numbers are a great way to measure the effectiveness of a wiki's staff, they aren't the only way. Another way to determine the effectiveness of a wiki's staff is to look at the interaction between the Staff and the community. If the Staff Members avoid interacting with the community at all costs, the Staff is not catering to the will of the people, which will reveal tension between the Staff and its members. However, if the Staff Members are actively participating within the community, the Staff is working for the people & catering to their will. A hardworking staff will be generally liked by the community, whereas a lazy staff will be generally disliked by the community.

(Continued).
